Welcome to the Academy
of Science  of Unknowingness
For the Cultivation of Unknowingness as Complementary Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities

The history of science is also always a history of not knowing.
Out of fear of the ocean of unknowingness about the future, people make ideas about the now and the past, make maps that are supposed to show paths in the unknown. However, to want to predict future events until the end of the world with it is particularly absurd, because only small islands of today's knowledge have emerged from the ocean of not-knowing, but the ocean between these islands is getting bigger and bigger. Particularly in the modern natural sciences of the 20th century a constant increase of the unknowingness is to be stated.

With each new telescope, which still more exactly grasps the cosmos, the unknowingness and the number of the questions increase disproportionately. In quantum physics in the prevailing Copenhagen interpretation it is finally given by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle that only either place or momentum can be known, the other must then remain unknown. In the interpretation of David Bohm and Louis de Broglio the non-locality enters into physics. So the unknowingness is fundamental in physics. Non-knowledge everywhere: Even with theoretically complete knowledge of all microstates, it is impossible to determine the macrostate of a material from it! See Unpredictable solids here. Certain mathematical questions are 'undecidable' - they are neither true nor false, but beyond the reach of mathematical knowledge. Kurt Gödel sends his regards.....

But not only the natural sciences, but also the humanities are permeated on the one hand by not being able to know and on the other hand by not wanting to know, whereby here a clear separation of the two areas of not knowing is difficult. Not wanting to know can lead to not being able to know and vice versa.

The Academy of the Science of Unknowingness was founded in 2023 by the freelance life artist René Talbot. The academy grew out of the Kurt Gödel Circle of Friends, which he also founded in 2016.

The central task of the academy is to increase the knowledge of unknowingness. To this end, various forms of unknowingness (e.g., not knowing how to know, not knowing how to want to know, or not knowing how to know) in the sciences are to be researched and discussed. The goal is to establish ignorantology (the study of unknowingness) as an elementary component of the knowledge society. To this end, we also seek cooperation with scientific institutions, social organizations and the business community.

The Academy of the Science of Unknowingness will periodically announce an essay contest, the "Ignorabimus", which will be held for the first time in 2024. As a longer-term project, it is planned to establish a documentation center on the fallacies in science due to ignorance.
